A new technology that lets you watch 3D movies without glasses

The day may come when movie lovers can watch 3D movies from any theater seat, without having to wear 3D glasses, thanks to a new type of cinema screen.

Researchers have described findings that the new technology called 3D Cinema has overcome some of the obstacles to a 3D invention that works without glasses and is widely seen from anywhere in the movie theater, but the new technology is not yet commercially viable.

Although 3D movies give a unique view and experience, wearing the annoying glasses for viewing is one of the main drawbacks, because it causes fatigue for filmmakers.

Sure, 3D technology without glasses is already in place, but it can not be developed to spread to cinemas right now. For example, 3D technology is often used without glasses for television, through a set of holes known as "Parallax Barrier" Where it is positioned in front of the screen as a separator that controls the angle difference. These openings allow each eye to see a different set of points, and then to impress
the viewer with depth.
Parallax Barrier, however, requires that the screen be placed at close range from viewers. This makes the implementation of technology in large areas such as theaters difficult, as the viewers are distributed at different distances and angles of the screen.

In addition, sitting in different locations means assigning a limited number of points to each person, so that each person sees the image in its place. "The approach to using 3D technology without glasses requires screens with incredible accuracy that can not be implemented," said study co-author Wojciech Matusik, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

But in the new technique, the researchers used a set of mirrors and lenses designed specifically for the difference of angle to allow viewers to sit anywhere.

Piotr Didyk, co-researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Informatics and the University of Saarland in Germany, told Live Science: "Through the careful design of visual elements, we can create very high quality 3D content without the use of glasses "He said.

"This is the first technical approach that allows the 3D rendering of non-wide glasses to be presented." In addition, scientists have concluded that instead of displaying images for each position in the theater, they only need to display images of a relatively small set of theater scenes .

Scientists have developed a simplified model for 3D cinema that can support a 200-pixel image. Through the experiments, volunteers were able to see a group of three-dimensional characters from a variety of seats on a small stage.

Scientists have warned that the implementation of 3D cinema is not commercially viable at the moment. Because their model requires 50 mirrors and a lens, although the screen is not larger than the usual paper. Researchers hope to build a larger version of their display screen and further enhance the accuracy and clarity of the image.

"It remains to be seen whether this is commercially viable enough to expand into a full movie theater," Matosik said. "But we are optimistic that this step is important in developing a 3D screen without glasses for large spaces such as cinemas and halls."
